Im quite confused why manufactures believe this is an appealing Grill shape.
I am not a fan to say the least
Except Audis design.

I've noticed this too.

It's European
It works with aero and pedestrian safety
Designers can draw that shit in a coma
The Foxconn got a great deal on the molds and are passing the savings on to the auto companies

I like Lexus and Audi but the rest are just so meh.

I fail to really see it in the Lexus "spindle" grille. That thing is just plain ugly. Personally I'm ok with automakers taking less risks design wise with the grille shape as long as the bodywork gives you something interesting to look at. A grille is easy enough to replace.

So THAT'S why I'm feeling so much "meh" in all these new cars…

Yeah, it's still better than the days when everything from the AMC Sprit to the Rolls Royce Silver Spur had rectangular quad headlights clustered above long slim parking lights on either side of a rectangular grille. Just about every car made from 1979-85 had some variation of that theme.

It doesn't help that US regulations at the time mandated the shape of headlights...

I've also noticed it. It was ok at first... then everyone was doing it. And it's stupid.
Even Chevy has it with their split grills. At least it's a variation?

I agree, i think its not audi's own face as the lexus has the spindle. The spindle grill looks good on some cars though and on others its kind of meh. TBH it looks better in person.

By the time the square ones came around, round ones were still legal, which is why BMW never adopted the trend. Square just became fashionable for awhile.

The Lexus is different...but not in a good way.

Came here to say the same. Seems like all designers are afraid to mess it uo like Lexus.

I want to see how Alfa do it. Traditionally it hasn't really worked very well with that shape of grille, forcing them to do something different.
Same goes for BMW.

That's true, both BMW and Alfa have good-looking grills. I like how BMW started to steepen them again like they were in the past. And the Alfa 'shield' seems to work on every car they are doing. A great example of how a unique grill can strengthen the brand identity (imo).
